New Report: 43% of Millennials will make travel choices through the metaverse

Booking.com’s latest report dissected trends in the travel industry and made predictions on the overall travel outlook come 2023. The survey which explored different age groups and their travel preferences found out 43% of millennials would make travel decisions through the metaverse.

According to the report, tourists will explore various functions of the metaverse and use it to make a number of decisions, including budget plans and tour destinations.  For example, the technology’s ability to bring immersive experiences for tourists would give travellers a chance to check into virtual tours of historical landmarks or virtual experiences of natural environments. Allowing people to visit and explore distant locations from the comfort of their own homes would give them a glimpse of what they would enjoy once there and open up a wide variety of locations before booking a flight.

In addition, Virtual Reality, which is a building block of the metaverse was a good way to enhance the planning and booking process for travel. For instance, VR technology can easily create virtual representations of hotels and other accommodation options, allowing potential guests to get a better sense of the layout and amenities before booking a room.

Overall, the survey found the metaverse’s potential to enhance the travel experience for both tourists and travel professionals was an area with high growth capabilities. Here is a breakdown:

New Report: 43% of Millennials will make travel choices through the metaverse

73% of the surveyed population were more optimistic to travel in 2023 compared to 2022. Events influencing more travel optimism include uncertainty around the global economy and the just recovery from 2020’s Covid-19 travel restrictions.

The survey found 43% would use the Metaverse in 2023 to inspire their travel choices, with nearly 46% saying they would travel virtually to a place before booking the actual flight. In fact, 35% revealed they would be willing to spend multiple days on the metaverse in order to experience an extended version of virtual travelling.

This will allow more people to visit and explore distant locations from the comfort of their own homes and become a great way to get a sense of a place before committing to a trip. Furthermore, the technology will help plan out an itinerary by allowing people to experience different locations and attractions before deciding which ones to include in their trip.

Out of the survey travellers, 45% of Gen Z and 43% of Millennials had the highest potential to leverage the metaverse and virtually explore different travelling destinations before embarking on their 2023 tours.

The Metaverse as a tool for enhancing tourism rather than a replacement for actual travelling

However, 60% of the travellers were not convinced by virtual travelling and felt the experience would not be as fulfilling as travelling in person. Therefore, it translates to the fact that not many people are willing to replace their physical travelling calendar with virtual reality glasses. However, the metaverse augmented reality and virtual reality will only serve as tools for first experiencing a place and then making the right plans.

According to the report, despite the Metaverse technology having the potential to provide immersive and engaging experiences that can allow people to explore and experience new places and cultures in a unique way; it is unlikely that it will completely replace the need for physical travel.

The Metaverse cannot fully replicate the sensory experience of being physically present in a location. The social aspect of travel is also an important part of the experience for many people, and virtual travel cannot replicate the interactions and connections that can be made with other people when travelling in person.

In addition, there are certain aspects of travel that cannot be replicated through VR, such as the opportunity to try new foods, experience different weather and climates, and engage in activities that may not be available in one’s own location.

Overall, while virtual reality technology can enhance the travel experience and provide new and interesting opportunities for exploration and discovery, it is unlikely to completely replace the need for physical travel.

Closing Remarks
